DIY Foaming Hand Soap with Essential Oils
This easy-to-make homemade foaming hand soap will leave your hands feeling clean and smelling amazing without the harsh chemicals found in most conventional soaps.

Using essential oils in your home can be a great way to begin making your own cleaning and personal care products. There are several benefits to making the switch from store bought personal care and cleaning products to beginning to make them yourself at home. One of my favorites it just how easy and simple it is to replace everyday items like hand soap, dish soap, and even laundry detergent. When you realize how easy and cost effective (and most importantly healthier for your body) it is to make your own, you will not want to go back to purchasing these items from the store.
I don’t know about you but I love a good hand soap! When you find yourself washing your hands several times a day it is just more enjoyable if you also enjoy the soap you are using. There is just something about using a foaming hand soap that seems more luxurious than regular hand soap. It is soft, bubbly, has a rich lather and if it smells good that makes it all the better!
Unfortunately, most conventional hand soaps nowadays contain harsh ingredients that not only are hard to pronounce but are also tough on your body. This recipe for natural foaming hand soap contains just a few simple clean ingredients and is even great for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
What all goes into making your own foaming soap? The key is in the ingredients. You will not find any ingredients with names like sodium benzoate, tocopheryl acetate, or decyl gluoside. Instead we are going to use water, castile soaps, fractionated coconut oil, and essential oils. That’s it!
It is best to make this is small batches, however, if you wanted to make a larger batch to keep extra already mixed and on hand then that is fine too.
In my humble opinion, this is the best hand soap recipe for any home. As a mom it is always nice when I know I can have a clean conscience with the products that my family uses on a daily basis, especially when it is something that is within reach of children.
To ensure that you are making a clean and natural alternative to the conventional hand soaps on the market, make sure you are using clean ingredients. I have links to the ones I use below.
How to make DIY foaming hand soap?
Here is what you will need:
Pump Bottle— For a foaming hand soap be sure to get a foaming hand soap dispenser. You can also use this recipe for a regular soap dispenser but it will not be foaming. These ones are cute!
Liquid Castile Soap- this is what I use. It it EWG certified and comes in a 64 fl oz jug. It lasts me several months!
Fractionated Coconut oil or Aloe Vera (optional)- this ingredient isn’t necessary but it adds a moisturizing touch that many people like. Here is one that I like.
Essential Oils (optional)- the essential oils are not necessary, however, using high quality essential oils can add antibacterial and purifying properties to the soap and allow you to make your own scents. Here is where I get mine!
Recipe
2 cups distilled or filtered water
1/4 cup Castile Soap
1/4 tsp or 1 pump of Fractioned Coconut Oil or Aloe Vera
10-20 drops Essential oils ( see notes for various combinations)
- Add all ingredients to bowl or container. I like to mix mine up in a quart sized mason jar.
- Using a funnel, pour the liquid into your soap dispenser being sure not to fill it too full and leaving space for the pump insert.
- This recipes makes 16.5 ounces. It’s usually enough to fill 1-2 soap dispensers depending on the size. If you have leftover soap store it in a airtight glass container (I use a mason jar). I like to make extra to store for easy refills!
These are a few essential oil combinations but the combinations are endless!
- I like using doTERRA’s Onguard for immune boosting support (especially during the winter months)
- Lavender and Wild Orange
